Thrifted Lookbook
By Anna Brown
A sense of individuality is something that our generation is continuously searching for in our contemporary society, which is exactly what thrifting is catering towards. The ability to separate oneself from such a harsh consumer culture is what begins to deconstruct the idea that a sense of identity is attached to quick, mindless purchasing. The art of thrifting is what reinserts an experience back into our lives, a chance to connect personally to clothing and oneself. When your individuality is highlighted, a confidence and reassurance exists. A sense of security and hope is brought about, for even if you cannot articulate every aspect of your identity and how these aspects overlap, still, self shaping occurs when given the freedom to express. Although the constant noise and chaos of our lives in the city is pulling us in every direction, the chance to be goofy and confident in a space that isn't as bustling allows for a slowdown. All of a sudden, we remember that there is something extremely humanistic and comforting about heading to the park, and simply enjoying.
A conscious mind within today’s climate crisis will make a difference. Thrifting is not only about tapping into individuality, but it is a way to reinforce sustainability in one’s life by recirculating clothing. Within the grand scheme of things, thrifting may seem like a relatively non-impactful action; it serves one well to remember that every small act counts.
